How to Check the Gender of a Rabbit
Checking the gender of a rabbit is very easy. In this article, I’m going to tell you some steps to check your rabbit’s gender. So let’s begin.
How to Hold Your Rabbit for Checking
Before you begin, ensure you have a secure hold of the rabbit. Hold the rabbit by the scruff of the neck with one hand and support its rear end with your other hand to keep it steady
Exposure
With the rabbit securely held, gently push aside the fur around the genital area to expose it clearly.
Identification
Look closely at the genital area. In male rabbits, you’ll observe a circular opening, indicating the presence of the penis. Typically, applying gentle pressure will cause the penis to emerge.
It’s worth noting that males under 10 weeks may not have obvious testes, and neutered males won’t have any.
Male Rabbit
If you’re examining a male rabbit, part the fur above the genitals and apply gentle pressure. The penis will emerge, confirming maleness. Remember, the anus sits at the lowest point below the genitals and is separate from the genitals.
Female Rabbit
For female rabbits, part the fur above the genitals and apply gentle pressure. Unlike males, nothing will emerge. The vagina and anus are immediately next to each other, and there is no protrusion when pressure is applied.
Always Remember, the key difference is the shape of the genital opening: circular for males and vertical for females.
